Hiç okula gitmedi. Okuma yazmayı kendi kendine öğrendi. İnşaatlarda çalıştı. Sinemaya set işçisi olarak girdi.1952'den itibaren oyunculuk yaptı. Orhon M. Arıburnu'na asistanlık yaparak yönetmenliği öğrenmiş oldu. 1970'de Pelit Film'i kurdu ve "Kızım Sana Emanet" filmiyle yönetmenliğe başladı. Senaryolar yazdı. 2 oğlu 1 kızı olan sanatçı, çocuklarını küçük yaşlarda filmlerde oynattı. Bir ara Türk Haber Ajansı'nda çalıştı.
